Species Focus
Sclerochloa dura
(Fairgrounds grass)
This often diminutive annual grass is native to eastern Europe and southwestern Asia. First collected in North America near Yonkers, NY in 1895, it has been collected throughout much of the Great Lakes region since it was first found near Cincinnati, OH in 1990. Curiously, most of the known populations are at county fairgrounds; yet it has not yet been found in an agricultural setting in our region.
See Cusick et al. (Michigan Bot. 41: 125-135. 2002.) for additional information.
