To continue our roles as centers of scientific research, training, and public knowledge, the Herbarium must address the following needs:

Director’s Strategic Fund
Gifts of undesignated, expendable funds are essential for the continuing success of the Herbarium.  Contributions to the Strategic Fund make it possible to fund new initiatives and meet unexpected needs such as:

•Establishment of a digitization facility to improve collection accessibility
•Funding seminars by visiting scholars
•Funding travel to professional meetings for students and collection managers
•Provide seed money for pilot projects by faculty-curators or students
•Graduate and Undergraduate Internships in Research and Curation

Named Endowed Professorship
To maintain our stature as a leading botanical research collection the Herbarium needs to attract the best faculty-curator.  An endowed gift of $2 million will establish a Named Endowed Professorship, in any of the taxonomic area represented by the collections.  This will promote scientific research and help to ensure the future of the Herbarium as a preeminent institution for research and teaching in studies of biological diversity.

How to give
Please contact Director Paul Berry or Administrative Specialist Michael Ehnis (ehnism@umich.edu, 734-615-6200) to further discuss giving opportunities.

Species Focus:
Cumathamnion sympodophyllum

This monotypic genus of red algae in the family Delesseriaceae was described from a population at Mendocino City, northern California (Wynne & Daniels 1966). Despite its delicate appearance, it is known only from intertidal rocky outcrops that are exposed to the full force of heavy wave action, nestled among the surf-loving kelps Postelsia palmaeformis and Lessoniopsis littoralis.  Its distribution is known only from Sonoma, Mendocino, and Humboldt counties in northern California (Wynne 2008).
