Species Focus:
Cumathamnion sympodophyllum
This monotypic genus of red algae in the family Delesseriaceae was described from a population at Mendocino City, northern California (Wynne & Daniels 1966). Despite its delicate appearance, it is known only from intertidal rocky outcrops that are exposed to the full force of heavy wave action, nestled among the surf-loving kelps Postelsia palmaeformis and Lessoniopsis littoralis. Its distribution is known only from Sonoma, Mendocino, and Humboldt counties in northern California (Wynne 2008).
