Species Focus:
Janusia schwannioides

The flower of this herbaceous vine is bilaterally symmetrical, with a flag petal for orientation of the oil-bee pollinator, which reaches between the clawed petals and scrapes oil from the paired glands on the back of the sepals. The oil, mixed with pollen, will nourish the bee's larvae when the eggs hatch. Flowers of Malpighiaceae do not produce the usual sugary nectar and are not visited by the insects that gather such nectar.
