Species Focus:
Echinocereus triglochidiatus
Claret Cup Cactus
 Cacti are among the world’s most drought tolerant plants, and this spiny clump growing on bare rock in northern Arizona illustrates this. The thick stems store water and allow the plants to survive long droughts while the thorns effectively prevent most animals from eating them.
