Biography:
Stephen Berrey is currently working on his book manuscript, entitled, “Breaking the Jim Crow Routine: Racial Performances, Surveillance, and Propaganda in 1950s Mississippi.” The book explores changes in black repression, resistance, and State racial projects just before the emergence of a mass Civil Rights and Black Power movement. Divided into two main parts, the first section situates public space and everyday racial practices within the larger context of the black freedom struggle. The second part charts the beginnings of a major racial transformation within the State from overt to covert racism.
