Welcome to the History Ph.D. Program

Department faculty represent a broad range of specialties in both geographical and topical fields, and readily encourage students to make new connections among fields and subfields. Students have access to many other faculty in the departments of Anthropology, Anthropology and History, the Women’s Studies Program, English, Sociology, Political Science, American Culture and the various language-and-literature departments such as Asian, Germanic, Near Eastern, Romance and Slavic. In addition, faculty and students in the Department of History are active participants in the programs of the International Institute and the many foreign area studies centers at the University of Michigan.

The application deadline is December 1 each year for the following fall term. The Department of History admits students holding a B.A. or M.A.; there is no M.A. program or winter admission. Please visit Application Procedures for specific instructions on applying to the Ph.D. program.
