Department faculty represent a broad range of specialties
in both geographical and topical fields, and readily
encourage students to make new connections among
fields and subfields. Students have access to many
other faculty in the departments of Anthropology,
Anthropology and History, the Women’s Studies Program,
English, Sociology, Political Science, American
Culture and the various language-and-literature
departments such as Asian, Germanic, Near Eastern,
Romance and Slavic. In addition, faculty and students
in the Department of History are active participants
in the programs of the International Institute and
the many foreign area studies centers at the University
of Michigan.
The application
deadline is December 1 each year for the following fall term. The Department of History
admits students holding a B.A. or M.A.; there is no M.A. program or winter admission. Please visit
