Joint Ph.D. Programs

Greek & Roman History

The Doctoral Program in Greek and Roman History is an interdepartmental doctoral program sponsored by the Departments of History and Classical Studies. By requiring courses from both departments, this program emphasizes both competence in the traditional disciplines of classical studies, including ancient languages, and familiarity with the interpretive perspectives and methodologies of historical studies. The Program interprets Greek and Roman history very broadly. Chronologically it covers the period from archaic Greece to the later Roman Empire, ca. 750 B.C. to ca. A.D. 500. Geographically it focuses on the extensive region that came to be included in the Roman Empire, in particular the regions surrounding the Mediterranean. Because of the extraordinary diversity of interests among the participating faculty, this program can accommodate interdisciplinary research with faculty in related departments, such as the departments of Near Eastern Studies and History of Art, and related graduate programs, such as the Program in Classical Art and Carchaeology. The Program also offers a Certificate for students in other doctoral progrms, including students in the history graduate program. For further information contact either the History Department at (734) 764-6358, or the Department of Classical Studies at (734) 764-0360. Students may also visit the Doctoral Program Greek & Roman History website.

History & Women's Studies

The interdepartmental doctoral program in History and Women's Studies is designed to serve the needs of students whose interests are not well represented by an exclusively disciplinary program. These students need conceptual and methological tools that are grounded in the interdisciplinary perspective of the Women's Studies Program. They have the opportunity to define an interdisciplinary approach to a research problem from an early point in their training with a faculty committee that can provide shaping direction. These students will benefit from the kind of interdisciplinary mentorship that is necessary to develop and complete an interdisciplinary dissertation. For further information, contact the History/Women's Studies Office, 1122 Lane Hall, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1290, (734) 763-2047, or visit the Program in Women's Studies website.

Anthropology & History

The program leading to a Ph.D. in Anthropology & History offers simultaneous training and genuine professional certification in the two disciplines. The program is designed to secure the intellectual and methodologoical rapprochement between the two disciplines. Over the last two decades, there has been increasing recognition in anthropology of the need to study cultures in historical depth, while social and cultural historians have turned to anthropoplogy for guidance and instruction. Students may apply for entry into the program when they begin graduate work or apply to transfer into it from either of the constitutent departments after one year of enrollment. For further information, please contact the History Department, 1029 Tisch Hall, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1003, (734) 764-6358, or visit the Anthropology & History website.
