
Consistently rated in the top ten US history departments and a leader internationally, the Department of History at the University of Michigan has played a key role in the development of research and teaching in the discipline. The U-M History Department was founded in 1845 and our first PhD student graduated in 1884. Since then we have graduated over 1,250 doctoral students and our faculty has grown substantially in number and areas of intellectual interest.
