  My dissertation, Welfare is Work: Public Assistance, Migration and Gender in Puerto Rican Communities, 1920-1970, provides a transnational history of the Puerto Rican welfare state, centering parallel histories of social workers and applicants, and exposing how public assistance impacted and conditioned Puerto Rican migrations. My methodology is to write microhistories of migrant’s experiences using documentary sources, such as administrative and case files from welfare offices, as well as oral history sources from archives in Puerto Rico and New York. My project contributes to scholarships on the politics of race, gender, and sexuality in welfare state formation in Latin America, the United States, and Puerto Rico.

  I am currently a visiting student researcher in the History Department at the University of California, Berkeley.
