History Concentrators Graduation Reception 2004
| About four hundred people came together on the afternoon of April 30, 2004 to celebrate and honor the History Class of 2004. Associate Chair David William Cohen launched the program in Angell Auditorium A with a rousing salute to the graduates and their support teams - parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends. History alumnus James Tobin (B.A. 1978, Ph.D. 1986) spoke to the graduates about the relevance of their history degree in the world outside the University, his own career a notable example. Many of the graduates were familiar with Jim's book, Ernie Pyle's War: America's Eyewitness to World War II, from reading assignments in their history courses. He most recently published To Conquer the Air: The Wright Brothers and the Great Race for Flight in conjunction with the celebration of the Wright's 100-year anniversary. He was a reporter for The Detroit News for many years. Professor Matt Lassiter commended this class of students on their activism and involvement in social and community issues. He invited each graduate to come to the stage to receive a History Department certificate and a handshake from Professor Cohen. A large turnout of 105 graduates and their families attended the program from the total of 250 History students who are graduating in May and August of 2004. A reception followed in the Haven Hall ballroom. The faculty and staff of the History Department extend sincere congratulations and best wishes to each new historian of the Class of 2004. |
