CHECKLIST
for Minor in History
The
academic minor in history is designed to complement
students' particular interests and encourage a
concentrated historical study. Students
outline a topical focus and cluster 6 history courses
within that field.
In consultation with a History concentration advisor,
students create a course of study within the framework
of the minor program.
Possible
minors are numerous:
geographic
area (Africa, Asia, South Asia, Latin America, U.S.,
Russian, British history, etc.)
thematic
subject (religion, gender & sexuality, empire
& colonialism, nationalism,
African American history, etc.)
time
period (ancient, medieval & renaissance, early
modern, modern etc.)
When
planning programs, please keep in mind that minors will
need to find enough available courses within the chosen
area to sustain a coherent focus because not all history
courses are offered every year. The broader the focus,
the more likely it is that appropriate courses will
be available.
PROGRAM
The
minor consists of 6 courses (at least 18 credits) to
be chosen in consultation with a history concentration
advisor.
I. Two-Course Survey Sequence
A
2-course sequence must cover a broad chronological span
in the history of the given topic or area. This sequence
is meant to provide a framework and orientation to the
chosen field of study.
Sequences
may differ from those required for concentration. Some
possible sequences include, but are not limited to the
following:
110/111 - Europe
200/201 - Ancient
204/205 - East Asia
206/207 - South and Southeast Asia
*210/211/212/213 - Medieval
220/221 - Britain
246/247 - Africa
260/261 - U.S.
284/285 - Science & Medicine
*307/308/309 - Religion
330/331 - Eastern Europe
347/348 - Latin America
370/371 - U.S. Women
*381/382/383/384 - Jewish
*432/433/434 - Russia *two
sequential courses
2) Four
Additional History Courses The
minor requires 4 additional history courses (of 3- or
4-credits) relevant to the proposed track of focus.
At least 3 of the 4 must be upper-level, numbered 300
or higher.
- 4
of the 6 courses must be taken in residence at the University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor or must count as in-residence
credits. Relevant courses taken through U of M OIP programs
abroad may be counted toward the minor.
- Only
one course
may be used to satisfy requirements of both
a concentration and a minor, including cognates
to a concentration. Courses taken for a minor may be
used to satisfy LSA distribution requirements.
-
The School of Education teacher certification
requirements for a "teaching minor in
history" differ from this LSA academic minor. If
you plan to earn a teaching certificate in addition
to this LSA minor, please discuss your options with
advisors in the History Department and the School of
Education. More information about certification is at
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/history/ug/teaching
and School of Education
Advanced
Placement credit that appears as History 101X
or 102X may not be used to satisfy minor requirements.
Only students who were admitted to LSA prior
to Fall 2001 and who have been granted specific
credit for History 111, 160, or 161 may use that credit
in place of specific courses as part of the survey requirement.
If, in this case, AP credit is used to satisfy
the entire survey sequence (160/161), the number of
additional courses will be increased to 5.
