Phi Alpha Theta

"We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways."

Phi Alpha Theta is the national honor society for undergraduate history concentrators.  The University of Michigan's chapter, Alpha Alpha Zeta, was founded in 1982 on the initiative of our students.

Faculty members are invited to talk about their current research at the monthly meetings. This is a great opportunity to interact with the faculty and other history students outside the classroom.
Faculty Advisor, Professor Ian Moyer (2008-09), will have applications at the meetings.

Membership is open to any junior or senior with at least twelve hours of history credit (GPA of 3.5 or better in history courses) and an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. The chapter elects its officers, as well as two undergraduate members of the Department curriculum committee, lending a student perspective and voice to curriculum decisions. Elections for the coming year are held at the April meeting.

Membership also brings the privileges of the National Phi Alpha Theta Society, including prizes and awards, biennial conventions, professional conferences, and regional meetings, all of which encourage student participation. A quarterly journal, The Historian, is published by the Society. There is a one-time initiation fee.

A project begun by, but not limited to PAT members, is The Michigan Journal of History, featuring scholarly papers by University of Michigan undergraduate History students. The Journal was founded in 2001 and is completely staffed by History students who make all editorial and organizational decisions, with the backing and support of the History Department. To read most recent issue of the Michigan Journal of History and for information on submitting a paper, please check the website: http://www.umich.edu/~historyj.
