Teaching Certification for LSA History Students
Students who wish to earn a secondary teaching certificate in history must apply to the School of Education certification program and take specific history courses required for a Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate. LSA students can remain in LSA to earn a B.A. in History and include the education course component over three terms. If application is made in the sophomore year, everything could be completed in four years.
Apply to the SOE certification program by January 15 to begin the three-term SOE program the following fall term or winter term. Application during the sophomore year is encouraged. To apply, click here and select "Apply Now!"
Students must be certified to teach in two areas (" teaching major" and "teaching minor"). Although the requirements for the LSA History Concentration and History Academic Minor differ somewhat from the history teaching "major" and "minor," there is overlap. Plan early, consult with advisors in the SOE and the History Department, and elect the right classes to complete a bachelor’s degree with teaching certification in a timely manner.
The School of Education holds bi-weekly information M-Teach sessions on Thursdays to explain teaching certification options. Please check the SOE Office of Student Services website for room and times.
Teacher
Certification Requirements
The general requirements for a teaching certificate are described on the School of Education website. The three-term secondary teacher education program includes two terms of Education practicum and coursework and a third term of student teaching. During the first two terms, students should also have time in their schedule for LSA classes.
State certification requirements include specific history courses which are subject to change, (particularly the world history requirement). Students who remain in LSA should include current required courses in their LSA History concentration or minor and watch for SOE updates.

History concentrators have additional requirements to satisfy and should consult regularly with history concentration advisors.

It is not necessary to earn an LSA Academic Minor in history for certification. The requirements for the history "teaching minor" and the LSA History Academic Minor are not the same, but some adaptation to the focus of an LSA minor is possible. Students should meet with a history advisor to select courses that will satisfy both programs.
