Teaching Certification for LSA History Students
The
requirements for the LS&A History Concentration
and History Academic Minor are not the same as the teaching
"major" and "minor" required for
a Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate.
However, courses can be elected that will satisfy requirements
of both programs simultaneously.
Students
who want to earn a teaching certificate along with a
B.A. in History should discuss plans early in their
career with advisors from the School of Education, the
History Department, and LS&A to coordinate the requirements
of all programs. Students must apply to the
SOE certification program by January 15 to
begin the three-term program the following fall term
or winter term; application during the sophomore year
is encouraged.
The
School of Education holds weekly general advising
meetings; attendance is required before students
can meet with individually with a School of Education
Advisor. Please check the SOE
Office of Student Services website for meeting times.
Teacher
Certification Requirements
The
general requirements for a teaching certificate are
described on the School
of Education
website. The three-term secondary teacher
education program includes two terms of Education practicum
and one term of student teaching. The first two terms
of the program allow time for LSA courses to be elected. Students must be certified to teach in two areas (" teaching major" and "teaching minor").
The
School of Education requires that the following History
courses be taken for certification. Students who remain
in LSA should include these courses in their LSA History
concentration or minor programs.
History
MAJOR Requirements for Secondary Teacher Certification
Students
must complete a minimum of 30 credits, including:
• Education 432 ("Teaching Social Studies
in the Secondary School")
• U.S. History requirement: History 260 (160)
and 261 (161)
• One course in European history
• History Colloquium, 396 or 397 (override needed
from the History Department)
• World History requirement - 2 courses as follows:
New World History Requirements (2008)
History 240 ("The World Since 1492")
and a second course from the following choices:
History 204 - East Asia: Early Transformations
History 205 - Modern East Asia
History 206 - Indian Civilization
History 207 - Southeast Asian Civilization

History 248 - Modern Africa
History 347 - Latin America: The Colonial Period
History 348 - Latin America: The National Period
Note to History Concentrators
SAMPLE CONCENTRATION CHECKLIST
There is overlap between courses required for certification
and history concentration, although concentration requirements include additional coursework.
In
addition to the U.S. survey (History 260 and 261), certification
requires a combination
of History 240 ("The World Since 1492") and one more approved non-Western course.
With these courses, the non-Western concentration requirement will
be satisfied.
A
European history course taken separately from the colloquium
is also required for by the SOE for certification.
History concentrators must complete a pre-1800 history
course, which could be fulfilled by choosing either
History 204, 240, 246, or 347.
History MINOR Requirements for
Secondary Teacher Certification
Students
must complete a minimum of 20 credits, including:
• U.S. History requirement: History 260 (160)
and 261 (161)
• One course in European history
• History Colloquium, 396 or 397 (override needed
from the History Department)
• World History requirement - 2 courses as follows:
NEW
World History Requirements (2008)
History 240 ("The World Since 1492")
and a second course from the following choices:
History 204 - East Asia: Early Transformations
History 205 - Modern East Asia
History 206 - Indian Civilization
History 207 - Southeast Asian Civilization
History 247 - Africa to 1850
History 248 - Modern Africa
History 347 - Latin America: The Colonial
Period
History 348 - Latin America: The National
Period
The requirements for the "teaching minor" and
the History Department academic minor in history are different.
When students meet with a History Department advisor
to declare an LSA history minor, they should make their teaching certification plans known and plan courses that can satisfy both programs. It is not necessary to earn an LSA minor in history to earn certification, however.
