Honors Study Abroad

You can find members of the LSA Honors Program studying almost anywhere in the world. Working with the Office of International Programs (OIP) and Overseas Opportunities Office, the Honors Program encourages students to travel wherever in the world their interests and passions take them. This includes two special study abroad opportunities that LSA Honors, in partnership with OIP and the honors programs of the Big Ten, has developed particularly for honors students:

The Honors in Florence Program brings together students from the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin-Madison for four weeks in the spring term to study Italy's culture, history, and art. Students enroll in two classes taught by Michigan and Wisconsin faculty. Past course offerings include: The Italian Avant-Gardes: Experimental Literature, Theatre, Art and Film from Futurism to the Present and The Florentine Economy: Then and Now. In addition, students participate in a series of lectures and site visits, designed to introduce them to the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Florence and Tuscany. Courses are taught in English; no prior Italian experience is required. Click here for more details.

Application Deadline for Summer 2009: October 26, 2008

The Contemporary Issues in China program is a semester-long (winter) program specifically designed for students in the Honors programs of the Big Ten universities. Students participating in the program will take a series of month-long module courses, taught in English, as well as Chinese language. Past module courses include: Introduction to Chinese History and Civilization, Contemporary China through Literature and Film, Ethnicity in Contemporary China: Visions and Practices, and A Changing China is International Affairs. The module format permits an in-depth investigation of Chinese culture and society today and facilitates extended field study. Courses are taught in English; although prior experience in Chinese is not required, it is recommended that students complete Chinese I (ASIANLAN 101) before the program.
