A Brief History of HSSP
HSSP began in 2001 as a collaborative effort between LSA, University Housing, and the University of Michigan's health schools. Starting with a mere sixty students, HSSP was originally housed in Mary Markley Hall before moving to Alice Lloyd Hall in 2002. In that same year, HSSP was pleased to be the first (and only) Michigan Learning Community to offer in-house academic advising for program members. In 2003, twelve second-year members returned as the first cohort of sophomore Peer Advisors (PAs). Since 2003, all HSSP Resident Advisors (RAs) have been "HSSPers" who have dedicated themselves to the success and growth of HSSP members and all Alice Lloyd Hall Residents. HSSP is now home to about 160 program students, with approximately 120 of them first-year members.
For more on HSSP's early years, see our cover story in Medicine at Michigan (2003).
During the renovation of Alice Lloyd Hall, HSSP will return to Markley Hall for the 2011-2012 academic year. HSSP students and staff are excited about the opportunities presented by our temporary relocation and look forward to becoming a part of and contributing to the Markley community.
Beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year, HSSP will be re-located to Couzens Hall to embark on yet another new journey for the program. Couzens was renovated in 2011, and HSSP is excited to make a new home out of this vibrant residential community.
