Winter 2008 HSSP Professional Autobiography Schedule

The University of Michigan's Health Sciences Scholars Program (HSSP) invites all UM students to join us for our Winter 2008 Professional Autobiography Series, featuring leading health practitioners who share their professional and personal path to a career in health and offer their insights on opportunities for students exploring health careers. Please join us for an enlightening hour of conversation at Alice Lloyd Hall (100 Observatory) Community Learning Center (Room 2562, past the LHSP Office). Each event begins at 7:00pm, and all UM students are welcome.

Tuesday, January 15
Manya F. Newton, MD, MPH, is Clinical Lecturer in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Newton received her MD from New York University School of Medicine and her MPH from Columbia University. She is currently in her third year as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar and enrolled in the PhD program at UM's School of Public Health. Her primary interests are social disparities in the emergency department and the demography and economics of the uninsured. Her research evaluates differences in primary care usage, Emergency Department usage, and health outcomes between urban and rural uninsured.

Tuesday, January 22
Vincent Cimmino, MD, is Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Cimmino is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and received his surgical training at the University of Michigan and Georgetown University. His clinical interests are in the treatment of breast cancer and melanoma. Dr. Cimmino also has a specific interest in medical education having completed the Medical Education Scholars Program at the University of Michigan.

Tuesday, January 29
Kenneth May, DDS, earned his BS in Biology at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and his DDS at the University of Michigan. Dr. May is Associate Professor of Biologic and Material Sciences at UM's School of Dentistry. He specializes in Prosthodontics, particularly issues of esthetics, impacts of aging, and improving the fit of removal, conventional, and implant supported fixed prostheses. He has published widely and is an active member of many national Prosthodontic and Dental academies.

Tuesday, February 19
Kathleen Wade, MSW, PhD, is Research Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean at UM's School of Social Work. She earned her BA in Psychology at William Paterson College, her MSW at New York University, and her PhD in Social Welfare from the City University of New York. Dr. Wade is Director for Social Work and Family-Centered Care at UMHS, and serves on the editorial board for the journal Social Work in Health Care. She teaches on death, grief, and loss, and social work management in UM's Social Work school.

Tuesday, March 4
Mary Buschell is Founder and Director of Trail's Edge Camp for Ventilator Dependent Children. She earned degrees and certificates from Washtenaw Community College, UM, and the University of North Carolina. Her pioneering work in Respiratory Therapy for children has earned her numerous awards from local and national community health organizations. The clinical specialties in which she has published and presented widely include pulmonary rehabilitation and therapies for children with congenital heart disease.

Tuesday, March 11
Scott McLean, PhD, is Assistant Professor at UM's School of Kinesiology. Dr. McLean's research focuses on identifying underlying mechanisms of sports-related injuries and effective injury screening and prevention strategies through human experimentation, musculoskeletal modeling, and cadaveric modeling. His research focuses on determining mechanisms of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injury and the potential for sex-dimorphic contributions to these mechanisms, understanding causal factors of elbow and shoulder injuries in the young overhead athlete, and how anatomy, morphology, and neuromuscular control combine to precipitate injury risk.

Tuesday, March 25
Allison Aiello, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at UM's School of Public Health. She received her BS at the University of Massachusetts, her MS at the University of North Carolina, and her PhD at Columbia University. She has been a fellow at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Columbia University, and at UM. Dr. Aiello's research explores the relationship between immune response to viral infections and chronic diseases, socioeconomic determinants of infectious diseases, and individual and neighborhood-level social factors and infectious diseases.
