Advising & Support

HSSP Advising

HSSP students receive personalized pre-health advising to complement the regular academic advising received in their home unit. HSSP pre-health advising helps members explore options and make good choices about courses, utilizing resources, making contacts, and developing a career plan.

HSSP advising allows members to:
  • explore academic and career goals
  • better understand prerequisites, requirements, and expectations of pre-health and health-professional academic programs and careers
  • identify useful internship, volunteer, and research opportunities
  • supplement information received from other advising professionals
There are several ways to participate in HSSP pre-health advising services:
  • pre-scheduled advising appointments
  • walk-in appointments

HSSP Academic Support Programs and Workshops

Each year HSSP offers numerous support and planning workshops.  These sessions are designed to provide members with valuable information about opportunities available at the University of Michigan and beyond.

Among the most popular workshops are:
  • Learning Skills and Exam Strategies—HSSP students will receive tips and strategies to better prepare for exams. Participants will be challenged to develop a personal "exam toolbox" through interactive learning exercises.
  • Ask The Experts—A panel of fourth-year HSSPers will share their U-M experiences and tips with HSSP freshmen in a fun, interactive environment. This is one of the many opportunities HSSP freshmen will have to gain insight from upper classmen who have "been there" and "done that."
  • Backpacking Party—HSSP Pre-Health Advisor and Alice Lloyd Peer Academic Success Specialist (PASS) assist HSSPers with backpacking and winter course registration. Topics include backpacking classes, requesting course overrides, electing classes pass/fail, and joining waitlists.
  • What Are You Doing This Summer?—HSSPers will receive info about U-M, national, and international internships and research opportunities. Topics include the advantages of participation, advice on requesting letters of recommendation, and electing spring/summer courses at institutions other than UM.
  • Transfer Admissions Fair—Representatives from the U-M Schools and Colleges of Nursing, Public Health, Engineering, Kinesiology, Education, Pharmacy, LSA, Business, and Dental Hygiene share valuable information about opportunities, application processes, application deadlines, prerequisites, and more.
  • Bouncing Back—This workshop is designed to help students get back on track if they're not seeing the desired academic results. Topics include academic resources and study-skills strategies.
  • HSSP Pre-Health Conference—This annual conference raises HSSPers' awareness about the many pre-health careers and opportunities available and the steps necessary to take advantage of these resources. The day-long event includes workshops, a pre-health info fair, and a pre-health panel.
  • Pre-Health 101—A general advising session in which participants learn how to prepare for a wide range of health-related professions. Students will receive an overview of the academic requirements for various fields, the value of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, and the importance of securing strong letters of recommendation.
