Digital Pedagogy Workshop: "Flexibility and its Discontents: Designing Accessible Classrooms and Assignments"
In this workshop Stephanie L. Kerschbaum (University of Delaware) and Margaret Price (Spelman College) will problematize the concept of flexibility, one of the seven principles of universal design developed in 1997 by a working group of architects, product designers, engineers and environmental design researchers. After an introduction to universal design as it has been theorized by scholars of rhetoric, disability studies, and architecture, we will discuss two specific assignments that demonstrate both the possibilities, but also the limitations, of attempting to enact access in academic spaces. In order to explore more specifically the complexity of universal design, we will introduce the trope of flexibility as a key concept. Ultimately, we aim to create a participatory environment in which attendees imagine possibilities through which their own classrooms and assignments can become more responsive and accessible for diverse learners.

Stephanie L. Kerschbaum is the author of Toward a New Rhetoric of Difference (NCTE, 2014) and as a 2014-2015 American Association of University Women Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellow, she is currently conducting a collaborative study on disabled faculty with Margaret Price.
Margaret Price is an associate professor of writing at Spelman College. She is the author of a book, Mad at School: Rhetorics of Mental Disability and Academic Life, and is currently at work with Stephanie Kerschbaum on a study of disabled faculty.
