The Institute for the Humanities funds faculty fellowships, graduate student fellowships, and mini-grants in support of interdisciplinary projects with a public component.
Faculty fellows are released from their usual teaching and service duties to pursue their research while continuing to receive their normal salary and benefits. Faculty fellows take up residence at the institute for the full academic year, participate in the weekly Fellows Seminar, and fulfill a service-to-undergraduates component.
Tenured and tenure-track professors from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses are eligible to apply. Please review carefully the faculty fellowship electronic application form for application procedures, detailed eligibility requirements, and LSA policies.
Graduate Student Fellowships
Graduate student fellows are resident in the institute, where they are provided an office, a stipend of $28,800 over a ten-month period, candidacy tuition for the fall and winter terms, GradCare health insurance, and a $800 special research fund. They are resident in the institute and must participate in the weekly two-hour Fellows Seminar.
University of Michigan graduate students who have achieved candidacy and have not previously held a Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship are eligible to apply. Please review carefully the graduation student fellowship electronic application form for application procedures and further details.
- All Michigan faculty and graduate students are eligible to apply for mini grants.
- Applications may be made at any time and must include a proposal, a budget, and a list of other funding sources, actual and/or solicited.
- A condition of funding is that the event have a component open to the university public (no grants will be awarded to entirely closed workshops, courses, etc.).
- Awardees must acknowledge the institute’s support in their publicity and submit a report to the institute at the end of the project.
- Funds will be disbursed upon receipt of the report; if this presents a hardship, exceptions to this policy may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
Applying for a Mini-Grant
- LSA tenured and tenure-track faculty should apply through eGiF (Electronic Gateway to Internal Funding).
- Other tenured and tenure-track faculty should apply by email to institute director Sidonie Smith at firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Lecturers and graduate students should apply through a faculty member.
