Documentary, Film and Media Series
Bill Crawford, writer and media producer, Austin, Texas

Detailed Information
Crawford will discuss the outlaw radio stations along the US-Mexico border that started up in the 1930s and continue to broadcast in various forms to this day. These stations, licensed to Mexico but controlled by Americans, pioneered many forms of political, religious, musical and commercial programming that are common today. The Carter Family, Wolfman Jack, Governor W. Lee “Pease Pass the Biscuits, Pappy” O'Daniel and numerous country and western and rhythm and blues stars all got their national start on border radio. Crawford will play rare audio recordings from the outlaw border radio stations.

Bill Crawford is a writer and a media producer based in Austin, Texas. He has written more than a dozen non-fiction books dealing with various aspects of American popular culture. In addition, he has appeared as a commentator on CNN, CNBC, Fox News, NPR's Fresh Air and dozens of radio stations across the country.
