Guggenheim Fellowships announced for 2006-2007

The University Record, April 17, 2006, reported on the Guggenheim Fellowships announced for 2006-07. These prestigious fellowships provide research support for a year for scholars in higher education, and for independent scholars. Five exceptional Michigan faculty members received awards this year, and we are very proud to add that all five have been previous (or in one case, about to be) holders of Michigan Faculty Fellowships or Professorships at the Institute for the Humanities. Gillian Feeley-Harnik held the 2000-01 Hunting Family Professorship; Dena Goodman received the 2003-04 A. Bartlett Giamatti Faculty Fellowship; Donald Lopez was awarded the Helmut F. Stern Professorship (2004-05); Jonathan Metzl has held two Institute fellowships: the 1998-99 Director’s Graduate Student Fellowship (later named for James A. Winn, the Institute’s first director) and in 2004-05, a Michigan Faculty Fellowship; and Andrew Shryock has just been named the Charles P. Brauer Faculty Fellow for 2006-07. Shryock received both awards for the upcoming year, so he will postpone the Guggenheim until 2008-09.

The Guggenheim Fellowship is widely regarded as one of the very top national honors available for advanced professionals in all fields (natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, creative arts); we are pleased that the Institute has recognized these fine scholars’ accomplishments and promise, and has given fellowships to all of this year’s University of Michigan Guggenheim winners.
