Jim Cogswell - “Thoughts on NOTHING TO SAY”
Date: 3/18/2008; 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Location: Room 2022 202 South Thayer Street Ann Arbor, MI Host Department: Institute for the Humanities
Jim Cogswell, School of Art & Design, University of Michigan Artists at Work Series
Detailed Information Last fall, Jim Cogswell created a towering mural in our atrium at 202 South Thayer Street as his contribution to an exhibition of works by faculty from the School of Art and Design. This stunning explosion of color and design transformed our atrium into an exuberant space.
He describes it thus: “Twelve visual modules form a vertical column of hand cut shelf paper adhered directly to the atrium wall, spilling a torrent of color spelling N-O-T-H-I-N-G-T-O-S-A-Y. This object is based on a series of works stimulated by my Fellowship year at the Institute, most specifically by an encounter with Visiting Fellow Samuel Delany, whose portly bearded silhouette is recognizable in these images.”
Jim will reflect on how his experiences have led to an extended body of work that exploits the tensions between language and vision as alternate, often conflicting, lenses for experiencing the world.
