American Council of Learned Societies A private, non-profit agency, members include 67 national scholarly organizations. Seeks to advance “humanistic studies” in all areas of the humanities and social sciences, while also promoting relationships among scholarly bodies concerned with these subjects.
Arts and Humanities Data Service - AHDS UK site, concerned with creating and preserving digital collections in the Arts and Humanities. Has its own searchable collections.
Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities Similar to the Huntington in that it’s open to the public as a museum and also offers support for professionals doing research.
H-Net, Humanities and Social Sciences Online H-Net, Humanities and Social Sciences Online
Humanities Text Initiative Aims to make scholarly resources from the humanities available in full-text format online.
Humbul Humanities Hub Catalogue of online humanities resources, searchable by subject. Also based in the UK, appears to be a bit larger than AHDS, although its emphasis is more on linking to pertinent sites and information, whereas AHDS has more of a creation and preservation mission.
The Institute for Advanced Study An independent, private institute located in Princeton, NJ. Has its own libraries, dining halls and residences for Fellows. Interdisciplinary, with particular emphasis on history and social sciences –also includes subjects such as maths, natural sciences, so not quite as strictly humanities focused as some of the others.
National Archives and Record Administration Of interest to those working in American studies fields, can search government archives and records across a range of subjects.
New York Public Library, Humanities and Social Science Library NYPL is of interest because it of its size and holdings, and also because it does offer fellowships for researchers, available to academics and independent scholars, as well as creative writers.
Smithsonian Institution Smithsonian Institution
Special Collections Library Special Collections has a wide range of materials that could be useful to researchers from a variety of humanities fields. The Papyrus Collection is part of Special Collections, and is the largest such collection in the United States. Special Collections also offers fellowship opportunities to promote the use of their materials for research and/or for fellows to teach courses using materials from the collections.
