  • Description:

On the 75th anniversary of Nazi Germany's "Night of Broken Glass," Richard Breitman will reexamine the reactions of President Roosevelt and other high-level Administration officials to events in Germany during two key weeks in November 1938.  The American government reacted more sharply than it did to later events, and it is worth discussing how and why.  Drawing on new evidence, Breitman will argue that these reactions make it hard to sustain blanket indictments of American reactions to Nazi persecution of German Jews.
