Jean and Samuel Frankel Professor of Rabbinic Literature
The Frankel Professorship in Rabbinic Literature has been made possible by the generosity of Jean and Samuel Frankel. The Frankel Family has made a firm commitment to Judaic Studies both at the University of Michigan and throughout the world.
William Haber Professor of Modern Jewish History
William Haber was a major figure in the rebuilding of European Jewry after World War II, as well as a former dean of the College of LS&A. Haber served as chair and board member of many international, national, and local organizations. The Haber professorship is supported by endowment funds of the Frankel Center. The incumbent of the Haber professorship is Todd M. Endelman an historian whose work focuses on British Jews in the modern era.
Frederick G. L. Huetwell Professor of History
The Frederick G. L. Huetwell Professor of History honors Frederick (Fritz) Huetwell, who received his A.B. degree from the University of Michigan in 1938. Huetwell devoted considerable energy to promoting the University of Michigan Club of Detroit as its executive director for many years.
During his lifetime he provided ongoing support for medical research and need-based scholarships for undergraduate students. The Huetwell professorship is shared by four faculty members, including Deborah Dash Moore, Frankel Center Director and an historian whose work focuses on American Jews in the modern era.
Padnos Visiting Professor in Judaic Studies
The Padnos Visiting Professorship in Judaic Studies was made possible by an endowment from the Padnos family of Holland, Michigan. It enables the Center to invite a distinguished visiting scholar to the Ann Arbor campus each year. Visitors are selected for their ability to provide courses that complement the offerings of U-M faculty. Recent incumbents have taught courses in Jewish mysticism, sociology of Israel, history of Jewish art, Anglo-Jewish literature, East European Jewish history and the philosophy of religion. The 2008-09 Padnos Professor is Mauro Perani a leading authority on ancient Judaism and president of the European Association of Jewish Studies.
Preston R. Tisch Professor of Judaic Studies
The Tisch professorship was made possible by a gift from Preston R. Tisch of New York City. The current incumbent of the professorship is Zvi Gitelman, a political scientist whose work focuses on the Jews of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
Samuel Shetzer Professor in American Jewish Studies
The endowed chair in American Jewish Studies honors the memory of Samuel Shetzer, a native of Suwalki, Poland, who immigrated to Detroit, Michigan, in the early 1920s. He had an abiding interest in Jewish affairs and a strong commitment to Jewish education. Julian A. Levinson, Assistant Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan, is the first incumbent of the Shetzer chair.
