Judaism & Christianity in the Greco-Roman World

The Judaism and Christianity in the Graeco-Roman World (JCGRW) graduate program offers an interdisciplinary experience for students seeking greater understanding in the history, religion, and culture of Judaism and Christianity in Late Antiquity. The program emphasizes:

  • Critical approaches that overcome anachronistic dichotomies, such as the distinctions between “apocryphical” and “canonical,” or “Jewish“ and “Christian.”
  • The Graeco-Roman context in which ancient Judaism and early Christianity developed.
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the past, in particular intellectual history and the integration of material culture.

The JCGRW also coordinates the annual Michigan Lectures in the Greco-Roman Era, bringing nationally renowned scholars to the University of Michigan to speak on a myriad of issues from Late Antiquity.
