Master of Arts

The M.A. in Judaic Studies provides a broad and balanced exposure to Judaic Studies while allowing students to specialize on one of the following areas:

  1. Modern Jewish Literatures & Cultures

    • Jewish Literatures & Cultures
    • Hebrew
    • Yiddish
  2. History & Social Sciences
    • Contemporary Jewish affairs
    • Ancient, Medieval & Modern Jewish History
    • Israel, America, Former Soviet Union & beyond
  3. Classical & Modern Judaism
    • Rabbinics
    • Jewish Thought
    • Jewish Mysticism

A total of 30 credits are required for the M.A.:

  • 13 credits in required courses
  • 6 – 8 credits in courses in graduate–level language classes or credit by placement
  • 3 credits for thesis or seminar paper (10-15,000 words/40-60 pages)
  • Electives — 8 credits (14 credits for students who receive language credit by placement exam)

All entering students are required to demonstrate second semester proficiency in Hebrew or Yiddish and, upon graduation, fourth semester proficiency. Those who come with fourth semester proficiency should take a third year of language.
