"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."
--Pablo Picasso
LHSP offers unique opportunities in the visual arts through a variety of classes designed specifically for non-art majors. Courses in Drawing and Painting, Performance Art, Art in Public Spaces, Conceptual Art, and Photography are offered regularly. Lloyd Hall features the Art Studio, the only one in the Hill neighborhood, which is open 24 hours a day for student use. Students also have access to a fully equipped black and white photography darkroom, also conveniently located in the residence hall. (Contact Sara Buckius if you would like more information on the Photography Club in LHSP.) LHSP also offers many co-curricular arts workshops, such as figure drawing and book making, open to all LHSP students.
One of the most popular LHSP art classes over the past few years has been Art in Public Spaces. Students have created breathtaking murals in Ann Arbor, Detroit, and in the UM Life Sciences Building. The course also sponsors Festifools, a street theatre project that happens in early April (around April Fool's Day). The class creates larger than life street puppets, exhibited in a wonderful community-wide street theatre parade and show.
