The study of linguistics at the University of Michigan began quite early in the last century, with the first degree (a B.A.) awarded in 1919, followed by thirty-one more over the next quarter-century. Aided by a long series of LSA Summer Institutes at Michigan during the 1930s, organized linguistic study at the UM commenced in 1945 with the foundation of an Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics under the directorship of Charles C. Fries (left).
