Linguistic Subfield: Sociolinguistics
Call Deadline: June 1, 2004

The 33rd annual New Ways of Analyzing Variation conference will be held at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) on Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2004. In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the 1979 Ann Arbor Black English trial, the theme of the conference is "Language, Ethnicity, and Education". Penelope Eckert, Stanford University, will give a plenary address and two panels will focus on the trial: (1) Revisiting the Ann Arbor Black English Case, and (2) Considering the Effects of the Ann Arbor Black English Case for Sociolinguistics in Education.

We invite strong submissions for 20-minute papers from all areas of sociolinguistics, including, but certainly not limited to those pertaining to ethnicity and/or sociolinguistics in education. Following NWAVE 32's lead in emphasizing an important poster session, we also encourage strong submissions for posters.

Also, we are pleased to announce that we will accept a limited number of abstracts for panel sessions.

For Paper and Poster Submissions: 500-word abstracts are due June 1, 2004 and may be submitted electronically at our website (preferred); via e-mail (nwav33@umich.edu) or in print form to Jennifer Nguyen, (jgnguyen@umich.edu). Submission forms are available at http://www.lsa.umich.edu/ling/nwav33/abstract.html

Authors may submit an abstract for one single and one jointly authored paper or poster, or two jointly authored papers/posters. Abstracts containing specialized fonts, characters or graphics must be submitted in PDF format. Abstracts for papers and posters will undergo anonymous review.

For Panel Organizers and Participants: Panel applications must be submitted by June 1, 2004 by the panel organizer, using the submission form. Abstracts for panels should include an explanation of the importance of the panel, as well as author information (name, affiliation, email address) and abstracts for each individual paper that will comprise the panel. Each author's abstract, as well as the organizer's explanation of the panel, may contain 500 words.

Our sessions will include three 25-minute slots. Panels must follow this schedule as well. Organizers may propose one session containing 3 papers or two sessions containing either 6 papers or 5 papers plus a 25-minute discussion period. Participants on panels may also submit an additional abstract for an individual presentation, but must agree to withdraw their individual single-authored paper if the panel is accepted. Abstracts for panels will not be anonymously reviewed.

Notification of acceptance of papers, posters, and panels will be mailed electronically by June 30.
