Assistant Professor of Romance Linguistics

Major research areas: Syntax; First Language Acquisition; Bilingualism

Associated research areas: Learnability Issues, Complex and Adaptive Systems, Creole Genesis

Dr. Satterfield's present research involves the formulation of computer models of language acquisition facts, extending her previous parameter-setting research to include issues of modularity and the development of linguistic representations in various language acquisition situations, including bilingualism and creolization. She is currently investigating elements of syntax which shed light on the claim that the conventional notion of "parameter of variation" is somewhat inaccurate, if not misleading. This year, she will be working on an agent-based SWARM computational model with the support of the UM Center for the Study of Complex Systems. In addition, Prof. Satterfield is developing an analysis within the Minimalist Program on variation in order to account for the simultaneous occurrence of both focused and non-focused overt subjects in bilingual Spanish-English speech patterns.
