David Medeiros attended the conference Islands in Contemporary Linguistic Theory at the University of the Basque Country in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. He gave a talk titled "The status of wh-islands in Japanese: Evidence from a reaction time paradigm."
The proper treatment of covert wh-movement has presented interesting challenges for generative theorists since Huang's (1982) pioneering work. In this paper, I subject wh-islands in Japanese to experimental testing in both an online reaction time paradigm and an offline grammaticality judgment task with theoretically-naive Japanese speakers. Results suggest that speakers detect no grammatical anomaly in the online task.
