Recent alumn Joseph Tyler (Ph.D., 2012) recently started a position as visiting assistant professor in the Department of English Literature and Linguistics at the Qatar University. This makes Jospeh the second Michigan alumn to teach at Qatar University. Rizwan Ahmad (Ph.D., 2007) is a permanent member of the faculty there.
Here is a short report from Joseph about his experiences in Qatar thus far:
"I am at Qatar University as a Visiting Assistant Professor, teaching linguistics courses in the Department of English Literature and Linguistics. The fall of 2012 I am teaching three sections of Intro to Language and one section of Topics in Linguistics where the topic is Bilingualism. I am on three departmental committees and will be giving a talk in December. My colleagues have been wonderful, welcoming me to the department and helping me get acclimated. So far, I have visited some of the Doha attractions, including walking the Corniche (a four mile long walkway along the water), visiting the Souq Waqif (a traditional-style market), and seeing the fancy island called The Pearl. And I'm happy to be able to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues."
