Watson, winning at Jeopardy! in 2011

The Syn/Sem Discussion Group will have a presentation by an outside visitor this week. Marisa Boston (Ph.D. Cornell, 2012), a Senior Research Engineer in Natural Language Processing at Nuance Communications  will give a presentation about the syntactic and semantic challenges that go into creating an intelligent question/answer system, such as that underlies the famous Watson. Watson was the first and only non-human contestant ever on the NBC quiz show Jeopardy!. Not only did Watson compete, but he beat the human with the longest winning streak in the history of the show.

The title of Dr. Boston's presentation is "Syntax and semantics in WatsonMD". More information, including an abstract of her presentation, is available here.
