Yan Dong attended the 20th Annual Conference of the International Association for Chinese Linguistics, held August 29-31, in Hong Kong. Yan presented a paper , based on her QRP research, titled "Production and perception of merging tones in Dalian Mandarin". Dalian is in the process of merging two of the Standard Mandarin tones, and Yan has been investigating this ongoing merger for the past several years. Her research has shown that, though the F0 differences between the merging tones are indeed small, listeners can still for the most part detect the differences between the tones. She is exploring possible acoustic cues other than F0 for the difference between these two tones. The image to the left shows Yan at the entrance to the Conference venue.
