Can I check my progress toward degree?
Yes. Click here and then on the link to Progress Toward Degree. You can then download and print the form (you’ll need to have your transcript, which you can get off Wolverine Access). Alternatively, you can pick up a form in the Advising Office at 1255 Angell. Either way, if you have questions after you’ve completed the form, call the Advising Office (764-0332) to schedule an appointment with your advisor.
If I’m planning on a double concentration, can the courses from my second concentration count toward distribution?
Yes.
Can courses from my concentration department, that I didn’t use for my concentration, count for distribution?
A: No.
What can I take pass/fail?
You can take almost any class pass/fail, with the exception of the fourth semester of your language, and courses in your major. That includes pre-requisites and cognates.
Can I use transfer credits to meet the QR requirement?
Most transfer credits do not automatically meet the QR requirement. For example, even if a math course you took at a community college transfers to UM as Math 115, it will not meet the QR requirement unless approved by petition to the LSA QR Committee. The only exceptions are transfer credits for Physics 125, 126, 140, 240 or any three- or four-credit Statistics course.
Can I use transfer credits to meet the R&E requirement?
Generally, no. Transfer courses can meet the R&E requirement only if they meet a strict set of criteria established by the LSA R&E Committee. The reason for this is that two courses with a similar title could have dramatically different course content. For example, even though Anthropology 101 at UM meets the R&E requirement, many Anthropology transfer courses will not because they may not focus on the impact of racial and ethnic intolerance. This is true even if the course transfers in as a course that meets R&E (for example, Anthropology 101).
Can transfer credits count toward distribution?
Typically, yes. As long as the courses are not going to count toward your concentration and are LSA courses (see your advisor if you are not sure whether your transfer credits are LSA credits), they can be used towards distribution. Courses that transfer at the 400-level cannot be used for distribution.
Can I do a joint degree with Business or Engineering?
You can do joint degrees with most other undergraduate programs at the University, but you need to be admitted to those programs first, and then you need to get the permission of the Academic Standards Board. Chapter 5 of the online Bulletin explains more of the details.
Can I take classes over the summer at a Community College?
You can transfer credit from a community college only if you earned the credit(s) while having first-year or sophomore status. Once you've reached 60 credits toward graduation, you're not eligible any longer for transfer credit from a two-year school, only from four-year schools. The issue is your class standing at the time you earned the credit, not your class standing at the time you presented the credit here.
