LSA Student Academic Affairs
The LSA Office of Student Academic Affairs formulates and administers policies
regarding:
- the academic advising programs of our College for “mainstream”
students;
- exemptions from or exceptions to College regulations and curriculum requirements;
- student degree progress and certification of degree completion;
- academic discipline;
- the LSA Academic Judiciary and standards of integrity
- the LSA Student Peer Advising office.
The implementation of the policies and procedures in these areas is delegated
to the Assistant Dean of Student Academic Affairs. “Mainstream”
academic advising programs and services are administered through the Newnan
LSA Academic Advising Center; exceptions and academic discipline are administered
through the Office of Academic Standards and Academic Opportunities.
The Assistant Dean’s Office
1213 Angell Hall; 764-7297
Overall administration of LSA Student Academic Affairs is the responsibility
of the Assistant Dean. Policy and procedure matters are handled in this office
and personal assistance is provided to students in special circumstances. The
Assistant Dean functions as the Dean of Students for the College, and also oversees
the LSA Academic Judiciary and is responsible for the administration of the
standards of integrity and academic misconduct. In addition, the Assistant Dean
coordinates the communication and liaison efforts between Student Academic Affairs
and the faculty and academic departments and programs of the College, as well
as between Student Academic Affairs and non-LSA units of the University.
Exceptional student problems and classroom situations which may arise in student/instructor
relationships can be brought to the Dean’s attention for guidance and
resolution.
Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center
1255 Angell; 764-0332
LSA academic advisors share with teaching faculty and departments the task
of facilitating the student’s academic path through the College by encouraging
intellectual curiosity, informed decision making, self-assessment, and the assumption
of self-responsibility.
Academic advisors:
- assist students in defining educational goals and in designing an educational
plan to meet these goals;
- help students appreciate the values of a liberal arts and sciences education;
- inform students about course offerings in the College, degree requirements
and policies;
- engage in academic problem solving and resolution of personal issues interfering
with student performance;
- assist instructional staff in matters of College policy affecting students
and in handling complex student matters.
LSA Academic Standards Board
1255 Angell; 764-0332
The office of Academic Standards and Academic Opportunities is responsible
for developing and managing strategies for improving the academic performance
of students. In addition, the office assists students with special advising
needs, e.g. students with disabilities, transfer students and returning adults,
cross-college transfer students and special students. Coordination of the Individualized
Concentration Program and the Bachelor of General Studies degree program are
part of the responsibility of this office.
A major function of the office of Academic Standards and Academic Opportunities
is the interpretation of the academic policies that are established by the faculty
of the College. Petitions from LS&A students for exceptions to the College’s
rules and regulations are reviewed by the Academic Standards Board. Exceptions
may be granted if the student presents evidence of unusual circumstances or
has an alternative proposal to meet a specific requirement that is consistent
with the spirit of the requirement. Academic Standards advisors also act as
consultants to faculty, staff, and parents on matters of College policy and
the interpretation of College rules. The Academic Standards Board reviews grades
at the end of each term and makes decisions about probation, suspension, dismissal,
and reinstatement.
LSA Academic Auditors
G255B Angell; 763-3101
The academic auditors check for the completion of all LSA degree requirements,
inform students of their progress toward graduation, and authorize graduation.
Peer Academic Advising Office
G150 Angell Hall; 763-1553
The LSA Peer Academic Advising Office, staffed completely by LSA undergraduates,
offers a unique comfortable atmosphere in which to obtain relevant academic
information. Providing peer counseling, PAAO presents students with an opportunity
to share and receive experiences in an informal fashion. The office maintains
such resources as course evaluations and old examinations. It disseminates information
concerning the newest and most innovative classes. PAAO also stocks graduate
catalogs from schools across the country as well as the latest in post graduation
materials.
