About the Bachelor in General Studies
Some students may want to consider the Bachelor in General Studies (BGS) degree as an alternative to the Bachelor of Arts (AB) or of Science (BS) degrees, particularly if they are not interested in concentrating their studies in a specific area.



Degree Structure & Requirements
Degree Structure & Requirements for the BGS degree. The BGS program is not designed for students who lack a specific educational purpose or direction.

BGS Upper Division Credits
Instead of a concentration, the BGS requires that you take half of your degree (60 credits) in upper division classes, i.e., classes numbered 300 or higher.

Writing Requirements
The overriding purpose of the LS&A Writing Requirements (First-Year and Upper-Level) is to provide students with both beginning and advanced instruction in college-level writing.

Race & Ethnicity Requirement
All students must take at least one course that deals on a fairly sophisticated level with topics such as the historical development of racism, and the social, political and economics effects of racism and other types of discrimination.

Quantitative Reasoning requirement
The Quantitative Reasoning Requirement (QR) is in place to ensure that every graduate achieves a certain level of proficiency in using and analyzing quantitative information. This is not simply a math requirement; rather, the focus is upon the methodology used to analyze quantitative information to make decisions, judgments, and predictions. It involves defining a problem by means of numerical or geometrical representations of real-world phenomena, determining how to solve it, deducing consequences, formulating alternativesand predicting outcomes.

BGS student guide
