Concentrations & Minors

The concentration (major) is an academic specialization you select in one of the area, departmental, interdepartmental or special programs within LSA. If none of the 74 concentrations offered by the College meet your needs and interests, you have the option of selecting an individualized concentration (ICP) in which you design your own liberal arts specialization. Concentration programs vary in size from 24 to 48 credits beyond the prerequisite courses.

Each concentration has its own specific requirements, as listed in the current LSA Bulletin.

You must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average in your concentration. The concentration GPA includes all prerequisites, all courses taken within the department (whether they are used for the concentration or not) and all cognates, if any. Some concentrations have additional grade requirements, for which you should consult the LSA Bulletin or a concentration advisor.

Choosing a Concentration (Exploring Your Academic Interests)
Most students entering college are not sure about what areas of study to pursue or what their goals after college graduation are. Don't worry, you are not expected to declare your concentration until well into your fourth term. Probably the most helpful hint we can give you in selecting a concentration is to choose one that satisfies you. Success in a concentration depends on a combination of interests, skills, and aptitudes. Listed here are resources for choosing your concentration, exploring your academic interests, getting the most out of your concentration, and FAQs

How to Declare/Change a Concentration/Academic Minor
To declare a concentration, fill out Declaration Form and take it to a concentration advisor for his/her signature. To change your concentration, simply re-declare with the new concentration

Declaring a Bachelor in General Studies
All BGS students should submit a degree Declaration Form indicating their intention to complete a BGS degree. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with a BGS advisor to discuss their academic interests.

Double Concentration
A student electing a double concentration must meet all requirements for both concentrations.

Honors concentration
All departments and interdisciplinary programs offer Honors concentrations. At the beginning of the third year, students may apply to a departmental Honors Concentration Program.
