From: Pugh, David Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2003 2:06 PM To: lsa-dev-osx@umich.edu Subject: Meeting Minutes Mac OS X meeting June 18, 2003 Laurie Sutch Exploratory - facility on 2nd floor of grad for faculty workshops also offer grad student series Knowledge Navigation Center is available for other stuff Been around since 97 support both mac & pc been running virtual pc, but moving to remote desktop for faster speed last winter term, taught a os x class which had about 10-15 people, which is a large amount, july class has 13 of 17 seats taken LSA is the largest audience fall classes: imovie, iphoto, dreamweaver, etc. most people using dreamweaver, not golive all handouts are online at http://www.lib.umich.edu/exploratory classes are only offered to faculty, not staff who support faculty since faculty are the only ones who stay forever in their position there are some classes offered to grad students and students. occasionally staff are allowed, but generally only if as a guest of faculty coordinate with ITCS workshops: faculty go to exploratory, staff go to ITCS workshops (but those aren't free) no MS access, no Filemaker pro media union has begun to offer classes now too, which are open to anyone trying to coordinate with other training groups so that same classes aren't offered on the same day so they can pretty much go anywhere anytime For OS-X, they will either visit the faculty member, or the faculty member can bring their laptop in for training Haven't really been showing people new stuff, just helping them walk through the new ways to do what they already know. Primarly explaining differences between old Mac OS and Mac OS X, why are there admin users, what are libraries, what's the dock, etc Home directories: stressing to use a home folder instead of scattering things all over. The main thing from Laurie's perspective is to ensure that people know that they're there and available. They offer help for any skill level (how to use a mouse, all the way up to advanced topics) New 25 station PC lab on 4th floor Shapiro If there's a batch (a few) of faculty that need training, feel free to send them her way, or they can do departmental training Jeff and the lab: lab is all bootable today is the day the password file is getting loaded uses passwd file from guardrail - we can load it in. Calvin from apple is doing the scripting work to import it into LDAP-friendly to set up groups and access control for those machines started getting walkthroughs on settings for workgroup manager they boot in about 2 minutes, depending on how fast they get their network information there will be an open house sometime in july - just need to find a time when math camp isn't using the room Gretchen and lab: 98% chance that the psych mac lab will be disassembled and changed to PC due to need for SPSS even though SPSS is now avail for Mac OS X. This affects about 30 macs. Not certain where the machines will go Jeff suggested using the machines to convert a solaris lab. Math labs sit idle much of the time, so setting up a cooperative lab would be good use of machines, space The Image: got it up on Monday currently working on getting a ramdisk mounted at startup so there's writable space working on getting resolv.conf built off DHCP responses need to have DHCP helper addresses set up - each dept will need to contact Mark Weishan. DHCP helper address points to the netboot server. What happens if a subnet has multiple helper addresses? Which departments will be testing? physics, psych, math?, Can't conveniently have multiple netboot servers available on the same subnet Karen will coordinate with Mark to get things set up and work with physics on getting it to work with their existing DHCP servers For math, we could just put the image on their existing netboot server We can utilize existing tools on osx for LDAP lookups for account creation Changing the hostname of the server from rotten.lsa.umich.edu to rotten.lsait.lsa.umich.edu - Karen will change DNS, phil will change server settings Phil will set up shares on packages drive on rotten for us to put stuff on there. Need to create accounts for people to do the install Dave will write a script to populate local netinfo account Phil will send out instructions on how to test Phil gone from July 1-9 Reminder - no meeting next week while everyone is at WWDC Next meeting: July 2 @ 3447 East Hall
