How do I wipe a harddrive prior to computer disposal?
Prior to disposal, you need to erase the harddrive of the computer. Here's how:Ultimately you need to get to Disk Utility and from there, you can select the drive and erase it. On that screen, you also have a security button where you can select various security options (write all zeros, etc) if desired.
To get to Disk Utility, you need to boot off some other machine - here's your options:
1) boot the machine in target mode (hold 't' during power-on) and plug it
into some other Mac via firewire - then run /Applications/Utilities/Disk
Utility from the other Mac
2) boot the machine from an install CD. Once the installer is visible,
select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu at the top of the screen.
Don't forget to reboot and eject the disc (hold mouse button down during
power-on)
3) netboot the Machine into the college SNI. Pretend like you're going to
install, authenticate in SNI,
then, once the installer is visible, select Disk
Utility from the Utilities menu at the top of screen
