LSA Mac OS X Environment

For Macintosh users, the LSA Information Technology's (LSAIT) Desktop Services group provides access to a limited set of software and software updates as well as assistance with hardware repairs and upgrades. By running the Dave client on their machines, or by using OS X, Macintosh users can gain access to the LSA Windows network, which provides network file space and automatic file backups. Please contact your Department System Administrator or LSAIT’s Computer Support Group (lsa-csg@umich.edu or 936-3279) for further information.

Purpose

A 2002-03 initiative was begun to create a Mac OS X image for use by faculty, staff and labs in the College of LSA. The statement of purpose read: “We will create an environment within LSA where Mac OS is supported in a more consistent way. Our first step in meeting this purpose was to develop an OS X image for faculty laptops. In September, we will review our statement with particular concern for the topics of sustainability and maintenance.”

The current Mac support structure used within the College is described on the LSA Mac Community page.

In October, 2003, the lsa-dev-osx group completed and announced the lsa simple netinstall method of building faculty laptops. At the All-College meeting 10/8/03, an invitation was offered to all LSA Mac Admins and LSA Unix Admins to come to a meeting 10/21/03 to kickoff the new Unix/Mac environment in the College and to discuss future initiatives. If you would like to participate in the future direction of the LSA Mac Community, please send email to lsa-dev-osx@umich.edu.
