Faculty Computing Upgrade Recommendations

 

Suggested Computer Systems for Faculty

2008/2009

The models given below are examples of systems currently available through UM strategic suppliers, though they are not necessarily listed in the current catalog.  This list is not intended to be all-inclusive.  There are many possible combinations of hardware, available from multiple vendors, at a wide range of prices.  For further information, please contact Greg Beyer (7-8214, gbeyer@umich.edu).

 

MS Windows or Linux Computers (software not included except where noted)

Desktop System ($1279)
Dell Optiplex 755, Intel Core 2 Duo 3.00 GHz processor, Desktop model, 2Gb Ram, 250G hard disk, 16X DVD+/-RW, 19” UltraSharp LCD monitor with sound bar, built-in 10/100/1000 Ethernet, 256Mb ATI Radeon dual monitor video, Windows XP SP2.

Notebook System ($1280)
Dell Latitude D630, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.00 Ghz processor, 2Gb Ram, 120G hard drive, 8X DVD+/-RW combo drive, 14.1" wide screen WXGA display, built-in modem and 10/100 Ethernet, Intel 802.11 a/g dual band wireless, Windows XP SP2.

 

Apple Macintosh Computers

Desktop System ($1239)
Apple iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.00GHz processor, 20” widescreen LCD built-in monitor, 2Gb Ram, 250G hard drive, 8X Superdrive, Gigabit Ethernet, ATI Radeon HD2400 graphics with 128 MB, USB and FireWire ports, built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0, keyboard, mouse.

Notebook System ($1289)
Apple MacBook, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz processor, 2Gb Ram, 250G hard drive, Superdrive, 13” TFT display, built-in Ethernet, Airport Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0, Firewire and USB ports.

 

Memory Upgrades

Prices range from $30 to $60 /gigabyte for both Windows and Macintosh systems, normally in increments of 1, 2 or 4 Gbytes.   Allowable memory configurations vary between models.  Do not order memory without consultation, unless you are absolutely sure you are ordering the proper configuration for your model.  Memory for notebook computers is often more expensive.

Internal hard disks - Most Macintoshes will only accommodate one internal disk.  These will replace the existing hard disk.  It is the responsibility of the recipient to back up all files and re-install software on the new disk.
