LSAIT Monthly Status Report - July 2013

Below is this month's status report for significant projects which LSA IT is leading or participating in, as well as reminders of services available via LSA IT. Feedback and questions are always welcome.

IT in LSA implementing cohesive service management - IT leadership from across LSA continue to work with ITS and AST on an August 8 implementation of ServiceLink, a tool for managing support and other requests. While this will enable greater continuity and collaboration in IT providing support across the College, there will be no change in the way you request IT support: you can continue to use the same phone numbers and email addresses as today. Behind the scenes, we are implementing a common service center of highly trained professionals who can best service your request. Information and training for IT staff is underway. IT Management of Biophysics, Chemistry, Earth, EEB, and MCDB - After conducting a thorough application process with dozens of strong candidates, we are pleased to announce the new regional research IT support manager, replacing two previous IT management positions in these areas. Dan St. Pierre will be joining LSA IT on August 12 to provide IT support management for these departments. Dan joins us from ITS Infrastructure Services and Operations, where he is well-regarded for his excellent technical knowledge, customer service focus, and ability to broker collaboration on complicated issues. While he will be missed by ITS, we are very glad to welcome him to LSA (Contact: David Sweetman).

MiWorkspace Pilot - This fall we will be beginning piloting MiWorkspace, the new university-wide desktop support service that is currently being implemented in administrative units in the University. Pilot units include Communications Studies, Development, Marketing, and Communications (DMC), and a handful of other dean’s office areas. Based on the outcome of this pilot, a subsequent pilot phase including additional academic departments will begin early 2014. Expansion of LSA IT East Hall Technical Services (EHTS) team - In order to more fully serve units in the southeast corner of central campus, we have recently expanded the EHTS support region to now also include Economics, ELI, International Institute, Linguistics, and the Residential College. To support this broadened scope, Michael Farquharson has transitioned to this team. We are also in the process of hiring one additional desktop support staff member to replace a recent staff departure (Contact: Eric Pinaud, David Sweetman).

New and Updated Software Available – Since last month’s update, we’ve released the following upgrades to software titles in our portfolio: MATLAB R2013a, SAS 9.3 rev. TS1M2, Stata/SE 13. Maintenance agreements for the following existing titles in the portfolio were renewed: Intel Composers and SAS. Click here for a complete list of all titles. IT Advocacy Pilot - We continue to roll-out the IT Advocacy role to additional units across LSA. We are now participating with 12 units across the College. Invitations to departments to join Phase 2 of the pilot have been sent. Phase 2 has begun and will continue through the Fall term. LSA IT Farewells - July 5 was the last day in LSA IT for Kevin McLaughlin, who provided desktop support to Biophysics and Chemistry and has accepted a new position at the Medical School. August 14 will be the last day with LSA IT for Yoni Drazen, who provides desktop support for EEB and MCDB and will be moving out of state to pursue a Ph.D. We wish Kevin and Yoni well in their future endeavors. We are in the process of hiring new staff for these positions (Contact: David Sweetman).

Annual Hard Drive Shredding - The hard drive shredding project was completed at the end of June. We recycled 1,283 hard drives and 847 media tapes. The recycling process complied with all current DOD, EPA, HIPAA and other applicable Federal, State, and County Regulations. Thank you to everyone who participated (Contact: Greg Beyer).
