Below is this month's status report for significant projects which LSAIT is leading, as well as broader Michigan IT initiatives that may be of interest to you. Feel free to forward to others who may be interested. Feedback and questions are always welcome.

U-M Collaboration Forum July 30, 1–3pm — U-M's Collaboration Forum is a public discussion group where you can ask questions, exchange information, and showcase interesting uses of collaboration tools including M+Google, M+Box, and CTools. Please be aware — this meeting will only be streamed via Adobe Connect. Join from the Hangout Event page. (Contact: 4HELP@umich.edu)

GPU service available on Flux — Harnessing the power of NVIDIA's K20X graphics card, Flux now has a new GPU service that can speed certain computations by as much as a factor of 10,000. Information on how to use the Flux GPU service is available on the Flux website. The GPUs are usable from within MATLAB, Python, and CUDA programs (among others). LSA is providing shared access to the Flux GPU service at no cost to LSA researchers who don't need a Flux GPU allocation of their own. (Contact: flux-support@umich.edu)

Blue Jeans video conferencing workshops — Instructional Support Services (ISS) is currently offering workshops on using the Blue Jeans video conferencing cloud service. For more information on Blue Jeans and ISS video conferencing services, please check the video conferencing page on the ISS website. For scheduling information, and to learn more about the workshops, please contact us: lsa-iss-videoconference@umich.edu.

GIS@UM Community of Practice and GIS Workshops July 28-31, 9-10:30am — Join us for the inaugural meeting of the GIS@UM Community of Practice in 2435 North Quad. This is a great opportunity to network and discuss GIS use on campus, followed by a presentation on what's new with ArcGIS. During the remainder of the week, LSAIT and the Library are hosting a series of GIS workshops on a variety of topics. Please visit the TeachTech website to register and for more info. Greg Beyer to retire August 1 — It is with a mixture of both joy and sadness that we bid a fond farewell to Greg, who is retiring after 27 years of service at the University. His last day will be August 1, 2014. A reception in his honor is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in 2001 LSA. (Contact: David Sweetman)

Improved notifications for IT support requests — A variety of improvements were recently made to the notifications you receive for your IT support requests. Some highlights include: (1) the email "From" field now clearly indicates who you are working with on each support request (LSA or ITS), (2) streamlined content, with the most important information highlighted for easy review, and (3) additional information is now included in the "Subject" of each email for easier sorting, searching, and viewing. You can also check and update status on support tickets you have submitted, check service status, and find answers to common IT questions via the new portal. These changes are a direct result of customer feedback we have received. (Contact: Erin Dietrich)

Flux Operating Environment (FOE) funding model changes — We are pleased to announce a new funding model for the Flux Operating Environment (FOE). FOE enables researchers to add their own compute hardware to the Flux environment. Researchers in LSA, Med School, COE, and SPH will not be charged for FOE subscriptions for equipment purchased through external grants submitted between July, 1 2014 and June 30, 2016. All other FOE rules apply. (Contact: Erin Dietrich)

Pilot funding for instructional use of Flux — Any LSA faculty member can apply for funding to use the Flux High Performance Computing cluster in their courses as a part of a pilot program currently being offered by LSA. (Contact: flux-support@umich.edu)

IT service request satisfaction ratings — Below is a summary of customer service interactions for LSAIT. Month to month comparisons show a decrease in overall customer satisfaction.
