UmichITAM aka LSA Software Licensing

The UmichITAM software-sharing consortium is a group of University units within and outside of the College of LSA. Consortium partners contribute funds to support volume software licensing and staff who provide associated services such as compliance management, license procurement, help desk, software documentation, review of license terms, and more. While the consortium guidelines for software funding are mainly limited to instructional or administrative use, a great deal of research software is offered as well because it is used for instruction. Interested University units are welcome to join at any time.

All University constituents may log into the sharepoint ITAM site as umroot\uniqname to browse the consortium software portfolio, learn about the program, view a list of software training events and news including workshops on campus, or discover other software resources at the University. IT staff in consortium units have additional rights to view limited information such as license codes.

ITAM/SAM

The ITAM in UmichITAM is an acronym for IT Asset Management. IT Asset Management is the set of business practices that join financial, contractual and inventory functions to support life cycle management and strategic decision making for the IT environment. Assets include all elements of software and hardware that are found in the business environment. UmichITAM’s scope is currently limited to the Software Asset Management (SAM) aspect of ITAM, and some staff maintain certifications in SAM. The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) defines SAM as "all of the infrastructure and processes necessary for the effective management, control and protection of the software assets…throughout all stages of their lifecycle." Compliance management and mitigation of external software audit risk are top priorities, as are supporting the research and instruction activities of the University.
