Karen Rhea has been selected one of three inaugural Collegiate Lecturers at U-M's Ann Arbor campus, in recognition of her achievements and many contributions to the education of U-M students. To honor a much-loved emeritus faculty member, Karen's new title will be the Patricia Shure Collegiate Lecturer.

The American Mathematical Society names 28 members of the UM Mathematics faculty to the Inaugural Class of Fellows  including 22 current faculty members and 6 emeritus faculty members.  A full list, sortable by institution, is available on the <a href= http://www.ams.org/profession/ams-fellows target=_blank>AMS website</a>.

Anthony Bloch is named a Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Fellows are SIAM members who are recognized by their peers as distinguished for their contributions to applied mathematics and computational science. The individuals are recognized for outstanding research in the field as well as their service to the larger community.  Bloch was cited for contributions to the dynamics and control of mechanical systems.

Carnegie Foundation names Stephen DeBacker Professor of the Year for the State of Michigan. Stephen DeBacker has been named the 2012 Professor of the Year for the State of Michigan by  the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He is one of 30 professors across the nation who were honored.

Daniel Forger to lead $1M study of how internal clock controls mood.  The project is funded by a competitive international Human Frontier Science Program Grant, which supports basic life science research with funding from 13 countries and the European Union.

Sergey Nadtochiy has been selected to receive the second award of the SIAG/FME (SIAM Activity Group on Financial Mathematics and Engineering) Junior Scientist Prize The Junior Scientist Prize is awarded to an outstanding junior researcher in the field of financial mathematics for distinguished contributions to the field in the three calendar years prior to the year of the award. Sergey is joining our department as a tenure track Assistant Professor in the Fall. He is coming to us from Oxford University, where he spent his last three years. Prior to Oxford he was at Princeton University for his Ph.D. 

Carl Simon receives a UM Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the areas of scholarly research and/or creative endeavors; teaching and mentoring of students and junior faculty, service and a variety of other activities.
