Summer is a great time to visit the spectacular Gateway Garden of New World Plants at the Botanical Gardens. The ornamental plants in this garden are originally native to the Americas.

Carmen earned her Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from Michigan State University. She began working at Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum in 2009. Carmen oversees the care for the orchid, bromeliad, and bonsai collections as well as leading the Peony Garden Initiative, a multi-year renovation project in the Peony Garden at Nichols Arboretum. In addition, Carmen helps to maintain a number of gardens at Matthaei-Nichols including the Gateway Garden at the Arboretum, Willow Pond Island, the Double Helix, and the Transitions Garden at Matthaei.
