In spring, Matthaei and the Arb burst into life. Over 20,000 daffodils in a line emerge and bloom at the Arb The fragrance of lilacs is on the air. Woody plants show off their flowers and the peonies peak in June.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of our Friends membership program, we’re offering a special members-only sale of heirloom peonies. Take an evening stroll through the peony garden in bloom and receive a discount on purchases of peony varieties locally grown by Northfield Farms.

Check our online calendar and dedicated peony website in May for exact dates. Join Curator Dr. David C. Michener for a series of drop-in tours of the Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden. Tours are free and open to the public.

  • Peony Blossoms and Pure Melodies

Sun., June 8, 2 pm (rain date Sun., June 15, 2 pm)
All invited to enjoy an afternoon of Chinese flower songs set amid the Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden and with the University of Michigan Confucius Institute. Free.
